Onboard Safety Check and Visit with RINA ACADEMY Instructor and Assessor

With the worldwide pandemic of Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) which is still increasing in numbers, millions of establishments, industries have been temporarily closed to prevent the spread of the virus. Most countries closed their borders and port for crew change which affect the livelihood and supplies of goods to a different part of the world. The crew changes have been suspended in March 2020 as a short-term solution to avoid disruption to the supply system. But as the pandemic continues, our seafarer’s mental health and safety are at risk due to depression and injuries and have been concerned with maritime agencies, private groups, and leaders.

On July 2, 2020, the Philippines opened the Green Lane allowing the seafarers for crew change subject to health protocols from the Philippine Government thru the Philippine Green Lane Joint Circular led by the Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro L. Locsin Jr.

With this circular, one of the vessels that RINA Academy is Affiliated with from the Manning Agency, AUGUSTEA Ship Manning Philippines Inc., arrived in Manila Bay Philippines for a crew change last August 13, 2020. As part of the academy’s activities, Edhart Marcos went onboard for a safety check and visit to see what we have taught in the classroom set up is being practiced onboard the vessel. This visit also allows us to document the onboard activities such as the crew change, provisions, onboard drills, proper maintenance, turnover duties, and document hand over as well as other vessel activities at the port. Through this opportunity, we at RINA Academy allow our future officers with our pool of cadets to visualize the reality of what seafarers do onboard the ship.
